"Situated
in the Gariwerd-Grampians National Park, the Brambuk Living Cultural
Centre acts as a cultural focus for the surrounding Koori communities
and visitors to the area. Traditional building techniques have been
married with advanced timber technology to create a responsive organic
building within an extremely tight budget. The design reflects the five
Koori communities who have links with the ranges". –Master
Builders Australia
Constructed in an environmentally and culturally sensitive area, the
Brambuk Cultural Centre represents a synergy between the environment,
local Koori culture and modern building design and construction. As an
integral part of the national reconciliation journey, Brambuk combines
architecture with the natural environment, and the shared culture of
five Koori tribes linked to the Gariwerd-Grampians National Park.
Consultation between stakeholders during the design and construction
process was vital for a successful result. Coordinating representatives
from five Koori tribes, as well as Parks Victoria, and other
consultants represented the greatest challenge of the project; work had
to progress in a manner approved of by all parties. Add to this a
technically complex and aesthetically impressive design, incorporating
many innovative and untried construction techniques, Brambuk proved to
be a rewarding challenge for Locks Constructions.
Local stone features largely in the magnificent entryway,
highlighted
by natural timber panelling and fascia. The architectural inspiration
taken from the surrounding natural environment continues throughout,
with organic line and form combining to produce a strikingly beautiful
building which fuses both visually and spiritually with the land and
traditional culture.
The structural supports and cladding utilise advanced wood systems,
which includes wide use of recycled timer, to integrate with the
surrounding environment and contribute to the overall sustainability of
the project.
Winner of the 2007 Master Builders Association Regional and State
“Best
Commercial Building $1m - $3m” and National
“Excellence in Construction - Commercial Building under
$5m”, Brambuk National Park and Cultural Centre embodies
striking design and cultural and environmental diversity, which Locks
Constructions is proud to be involved with.
